What is volumetric weight and how do I calculate it?

Updated 3 hours ago

To make sure you receive the best possible value, our services are priced in tiers across all routes. The cost of a shipment depends on the size or weight of your item.

Couriers charge based on either the actual weight or the volumetric weight, whichever is greater. This is why it is essential to enter accurate measurements when booking. All items are weighed and measured as they move through the courier network, and any differences between the declared and actual values may result in an additional charge. These charges are normally applied within thirty days of delivery.

Volumetric weight refers to the amount of space an item occupies on a vehicle. Large items that are light in weight can take up more space than smaller, heavier items, so they are priced according to their volumetric weight.

How to calculate volumetric weight

Using centimetres and kilograms

Formula

(DepthxHeightxWidth)÷5000(Depth x Height x Width) ÷ 5000

Your shipment will be charged based on whichever figure is greater, the actual weight or the volumetric weight.

Example

A box weighs 15kg and measures 50cm x 70cm x 40cm.

Actual weight: 15kg

Volumetric weight: (50 x 70 x 40) ÷ 5000 = 28kg

This shipment would be charged at 28kg.

Using inches and pounds

Formula

(DepthxHeightxWidth)÷139(Depth x Height x Width) ÷ 139

Example

A box weighs 40lbs and measures 12in x 28in x 19in.

Actual weight: 40lbs

Volumetric weight: (12 x 28 x 19) ÷ 139 = 45.92lbs

This shipment would be charged at 46lbs.

Important Information To Note

If the volumetric calculation results in a decimal value, for example 28.3kg or 45.2lbs, it will always be rounded up to the next whole number for pricing purposes.
