How to describe your items for customs

Last updated on 13 Nov, 2025

Customs need clear and specific information about what you are sending. Good descriptions help avoid delays. Keep things simple and precise.

What to include

1
What the item is

Be specific.

Good examples: cotton T shirts, laptop computer, stainless steel pan.

Avoid vague terms such as clothes, electronics or household items.

2
What it is made from

Material helps customs classify the goods.

Examples: wooden frame, polyester scarf, leather shoes.

3
Quantity

State how many of each item you are sending.

You will be required to detail this on your customs form, please ensure it is correct.

What to avoid

• Do not use catch all descriptions such as miscellaneous, personal items or assorted goods.

• Do not list only a brand. For example, say Playstation 5 Games Console rather than simply Playstation.

• Do not group unrelated items together on one line. List similar items together.

Good complete examples

• Two Mens Cotton T shirts

• One Apple Macbook Air 2020

• Set of three stainless steel kitchen utensils

• Two children’s dinosaur toys, plastic
